The Hellenic Genocide was the systematic torture, massacre and ethnic cleansing of several millions Hellenes (Greeks) perpetrated by the Turks in Asia
website
Constantinople (now called Istanbul by the Turks), Eastern Thrace, Imvros, Tenedos, Macedonia, Cappadocia and Pontos. Most of the victims were massacred between 1895 (much earlier than the World War I) and 1955 (much after the World War II). The present estimate is that some 2.000.000 Greek children, men and women of all ages were killed during that period. In the same places and often at the same time, the Turks tortured and massacred millions of Armenians and Assyrians of all ages. The fact that the three nations were victims of the same extermination policy is another proof of each of the three Genocides. It was not a "war", it was not a "revolt". It was a planned effort of extermination. It was an effort of the Turks to get rid of their former slaves, since they were not useful anymore. It was an effort to create a "Turkey for the Turks", as the Turkish leaders called it, in the lands of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks still under Turkish occupation. The Turks had invaded the lands of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks. Since they couldn't continue to use them as slaves, they decided to exterminate them. And they did it.It was not a "religious fight" either. The persecution of the Kurds, who are Muslims like the Turks, began as soon as most of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, who are all Christians, had been exterminated. The Kurds were misled into thinking that by helping the Turks to exterminated the "infidels", as the they referred to the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, they would have a land of their own. The Kurds did help the Turks but only to become the next victims of the plan to create a "Turkey for the Turks". The persecution of the Kurds was a natural consequence. After all, the objective of the Turkish leaders was not a "Turkey for the Muslims".In a way, the Hellenic Genocide still didn't end, as its few survivors are persecuted right now in all territories ruled by the Turks, especially in Constantinople and Imvros. For instance, in Imvros, in 1999, a six years old Greek boy was burned alive by the Turks. The Orthodox Patriarchate, located in Constantinople, which has a similar meaning as the Vatican, is attacked often. The rights of the few survivors of the Hellenic Genocide are shamefully denied. The Treaty of Lausanne is continually disrespected. Even the frequent invasions by Turkey of the airspace and the territorial sea of Greece (which amount to hundreds every year), can be considered reflexes of its extermination policy. If for the Turkish rulers, the Greeks don't have the right to live, they don't have any rights. This site will contain a detailed work on the Hellenic Genocide. It will analyse all aspects of that crime against humanity, with documentation from many sources, including recent ones.Until the work is completed, please see a related work by the same author, published in 2001 (available only in English so far). It contains hundreds of accounts on the Hellenic Genocide from eyewitnesses from several nations, as well as hundreds of photographs, several maps, posters, documents and films. The work has many references to the Armenians and Assyrians. It's not possible to research any of the three Genocides using accounts of eyewitnesses without researching also the other two.The work uses only quotes from documents that are completely and freely available on the Internet, which are linked to each quote used. Thus, there's no risk of anything being used out of its original context and the reader can easily extend their research. Please, visit:The Hellenic GenocideQuotes from historical documents and related Photos.visit website
ELENI BAKOPANOS
I will divide the short time that I Have into two parts :
1/ Why I am here ?
2/ What has been done in the House of Commons of Canada for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide ?
Why am I here, you may ask ? Some may believe that I came to Paris to enjoy the city and what it has to offer. Somme may say it is because my good and dear friends of the Armenian National Committee asked me to be part of the Canadian delegation… and this is true and I thank them for considering me a friend and an ally in this cause. Some may even believe, as do many Ambassadors of Turkish Government in Canada, that I, Eleni Bakopanos, born in Greece, have an inbred gene to accuse the Ottoman Turks of atrocities committed not only against 1.5 million Armenians but thousands of Pontians and Greeks who were also slaughtered around the same time. And, this may be one of the reasons that I am here… Because I will always speak for the victims of ethnic cleansing. Others may believe that I am simply here as a Canadian Parliamentarian representing my government, my colleagues from the Senate and the House of Commons and more importantly my constituents of Armenian origin who I thank for their continued support and collaboration.
Although all these reasons are part and parcel of my motivation for being here, my presence is based on a greater principle that my very wise ancestors of ancient Greece said and practiced : work for a greater good. We must all seek to do good by recognising a wrong and speaking against it. But even more importantly I am here to assure that the survivors of the Armenian Genocide, who I have personally met in Montreal and in my constituency can leave this life knowing that people like us are fighting for recognition and closure to the horrors they lived and witnessed first-hand and that have haunted them all their lives, and to assure them that the Turkish government recognises the Armenian Genocide and other atrocities and moves towards reconciliation.
To this day, these unacceptable acts of inhumanity continue, despite the fact that the Geneva Convention condemns such actions. Even though the international community has admitted that these acts should not be practised, we are till a long way from achieving this goal. Present events attest to similar acts and cry out for our vigilance.
The Nuremberg war crimes tribunal for the first time tried those guilty of committing crimes against humanity. These crimes were defined in article 6 of the London charter and included murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation and other inhumaine acts committed against any civilian population before or during the war, or persecution on political, racial and religious grounds.
While not at all criminals have been tried the international community recognizes the holocaust and commemorates it every year so that everyone around the world will remember this tragedy to ensure that it will never occur again. Regardless of this, we still live in a world where ethnic cleansing is practised, the most recent examples being the horrors that were committed in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
The Armenian genocide that took place around the time of the First World War is perhaps the most vivid example of genocide as an instrument of national policy by the Ottoman Turks. What makes the Armenian genocide such a particular example is that unlike the genocide of the Jewish people that took place during he second World War, the international community did not try the war criminals or even formally acknowledge that this massacre took place.
This is why it is very important that we do not give up on seeking wide recognition.
Merci… Thank you… Shenorhakaloutioune.

(...) Laz The Colchis or Colchida region is called Kolkheti in Laz/Mingrelian, the native language. This is the coastal eastern border of the Black Sea, in present day Turkey and Georgia. Laz/Mingrelian is a South Caucasian or Kartvelian language with two varieties, Laz and Mingrelian, close to Georgian. The majority of Laz people are living in Turkey, but Laz has no official status in Turkey. 1.5 million Laz live in Turkey and approximately 250,000 speak Laz (others give much lower figures). The term Lazistan is also used for the region of the Laz in Turkey, but that region does not cover all the Laz territory. In adition Lazistan is a forbidden term in Turkey, where Dogu Karadeniz is used to name Colchis. Mingrelia is in Georgia , but Mingrelian has no official status there. There may be 1,2 million Mingrelians in Georgia, 500.000 speakers of the language. So far, we have a list for Laz in Turkey. The language is natively called Lazuri (Laz) or Margaluri (Mingrelian). Lazistan
Lazika or Lazistan was a principality under succesive Byzantine and Arab rule. In the IXth century, it was occupied by the principality of Taoklardjetia and in the Xth century it was annexed by the kingdom of Georgia. Autonomy was gained in 1010. In XIVth Century, Lazistan was transferred to the principality of Guria but retained autonomy. In the XVth century it was occupied for a short period by the Ottoman army, and again occupied in the XVIth century. It was then reconquerred by Gurian prince Rostima (1564), reoccupied two times, and reconquerred, for the last time by Mamia Gureli prince in 1604). In 1627, it was included in the Ottoman Empire and the country was islamized. PONTOS

DUBBELE NATIONALITEIT OF INVASIE?

Pontic Greeks.
The coastal region was colonized by the Ionians, especially the city of Miletus which founded Sinope (785 BC), Trapezunta (756 BC) and the numerous other cities along the coast from Heracleia to Discurias in the Caucasus. The Hinterland was gradually Hellenized and this was completed after Alexander's conquests.
Its contribution to Hellenism in those 2800 years has been enormous: Diogenes hailed from Sinope and Strabo from Amaseia, it was here that Xenophon found a safe haven, that the great Comneni dynasty reigned, the home of Cardinal Bessarion and the Hypsilandis family; it was also the last Greek territory to fall to the Turks (in 1461). Many famous churches, monasteries and schools are a testament to the resilience of Hellenism. The Pontians are a distinct Greek people with their own dialect, dances, songs and theatre.
Intermingling and influencing each other, both ancestral Greeks and Armenians shaped Anatolia and the Near East immeasurably.
The Greek community in Armenia dates back to the Greek War of Independence, when Greeks living in Anatolia were persecuted by Ottomans. The persecutions became mass slaughter during the Russo-Turkish-Persian War of 1827-1828, and large communities immigrated to Eastern Armenia in its wake. Further immigration continued during the Armenian, and then the Greek, genocides of 1915-1921.
Greeks share a common tragedy (their genocides) and a common enemy (Turkey), which forged close ties in the ensuing century. In fact, the Greek genocide is often lock-step with the Armenian holocaust, both singled out for extermination for being Christians.
The turning point in the treatment of Greeks in Turkey was the alliance between Germany and the Sultan that commenced after the Treaty of Berlin 1878. Germany regarded Anglo French protection of Christians as an obstacle to its interests and convinced the Turkish authorities that the Greeks were working for the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
The successful national movements in the Balkans posed a threat that the same would occur in Asia Minor. After the Balkan Wars the Young Turks decided that Asia Minor would be a homeland for Turks alone and that the Greeks and Armenians had to be eliminated. The outbreak of World War I made this possible and Germany willingly sacrificed the Christian minorities to achieve its aim in the Middle East. However, it is the German and Austrian diplomats reports that confirm that what took place was a systematic and deliberate extermination of the Christian population.
By government decree 1,500,000 Armenians and 300,000 Pontic Greeks were annihilated through exile, starvation, cold, illness, slaughter, murder, gallows, axe, and fire. Those who survived fled never to return. The Pontians now lie scattered all over the world, about 5,000 in Armenia. As a result of the genocide and their unique history, language (the dialect is a valuable link between ancient and modern Greek), and culture are endangered and face extinction.
Now
With the glaring exception of the Greek Telecom OTE destruction of the Armenian telephone system, Greeks and Armenians continue to share positive relations and a common goal of forcing Turkey to admit to its genocidal history. Despite this, Greeks who remained in Armenia during the Soviet times have faced the same emigration as native Armenians, searching for a living and a better life elsewhere.
Greeks living in Armenia speak Ponti, or Old Greek, which was the language used by Homer and Plato. Settling in rural villages and mining towns, Greeks found tolerance in Armenia, where they built their own schools and spoke their language along with Armenian and Russian.
Many of the young have immigrated back to Greece since the collapse of the Soviet Union, where they find work, but also feel ostracized in a society that speaks modern Greek.
The main areas of Greek residence in Armenia are the canyon of Alaverdi and the Lori Highland, as well as Yerevan, the capital, the cities Noyemberian and Giumri. Greek communities can be found at Hankavan, Alaverdi and Arzni.

PONTOS
In the 8th century BC, many greek cities were created and the main occupation was sea trade. Sinope with its harbor was a strong trade center with important cultural influence. The first cities preserved the same social and political organization as their colonial mother-towns.
In the period of Alexander the Great and his successors, the economic power of the Greek cities reached its zenith. Under the reign of king Mithridates VI Eupator, the Greek language became official language of Asia Minor.
Even in Roman times, the Greek culture in the eastern part of the Black Sea retained its leading role in the economic and cultural life of that region. St. Andrew and St. Peter profited from the fact that the spoken language was Greek and spread Christianity to Pontos. Greek culture and Orthodoxy were united and formed a homogenous culture.
After the capture of Constantinople by the Franks in 1204, Alexios Comnenos founded in Pontos the Empire of the Great Komnenes of Trebizond which had at that time great development.
The fall of Constantinople (1453) and, eight years later of Trebizond (1461) mark one of the greatest disasters in Greek history. Mehmet later murdered the emperor David and 5 of his children and forbade their bodies to be burried. But David's wife alone buried her husband and her children with her bare hands. She was imprisoned for that action. Immediately after the seize of Trebizond by the Ottomans, many inhabitants of the rich coastal towns fled. Most of them escaped into the remote mountain regions of Pontos.
PONTIANS
WHO ARE THE PONTIANS?
In mythology, Pontos is mentioned as the area were Jason and the Argonauts sailed to find the Golden Fleece. It is also believed it is the area where the Amazon women lived. Pontos was first mentioned by Xenophon (430 - 355 BC)Anabasis, when his 10,000 soldiers had reached the Pontian sea and cried out 'Thalassa! Thalassa!' - "The sea! The sea!", the local people understood them. They were Greeks too and, according to Xenophon, they had been there for over 300 years.
THE PONTIAN EXPERIENCE
In time, other Greeks followed their path and, as numbers grew, Greek colonies were established along the Black Sea coastline (currently northern Turkey). This area came to be known as 'Pontos' meaning 'of the sea' (in Ancient Greek). Over Thousands of years the Pontos region flourished, contributing to the development of a rich civilization with a strong Hellenic basis. For many years later they lived under Ottoman rule but maintained a strong sense of Hellenism and Greek Orthodoxy. Great wealth and prosperity helped Pontos grow and soon the cities of Pontos had grown to become almost autonomous city states. Pontos was also inhabited and invaded by the Persians, Romans, Alexander the Great, Germany, Russia and finally, the Turks. The land also had its share of royal rulers such as Mithridates family and the Commnenus family, which made Trabzond (Trapezounda) the capital of the Byzantine Empire from 1204 to 1461.
THE LEAD-UP TO THE GENOCIDE
After World War 1 (Australia was at Gallipoli, Turkey) Moustafa Kemal, also known as Ataturk or 'father of the Turks' had emerged. His views for the Neo-Turks was for a Turkey for the Turks. Russia invaded and the Greeks of the area were seen as a threat. The Turks had German advisers who suggested it would be better to rid the Greeks who were of the same religion as the Russians.
THE TRUE HORROR
Between 1916 - 1923 a large campaign started to rid Turkey of the Greeks. Those who fled were lucky, while others were put through hell. Whole villages were moved further and further away from the Turkish/Russian front and into the depths of Asia Minor with the only destination being death. Many died from hunger, disease, cold and heartache. If they were lucky, they died at the beginning. Author Harry Tsirkinidis, in his book, 'At Last We Have Uprooted Them', wrote: "Using knifes they killed her cousin Theodora and pulled out her heart and splattered the blood onto the other women to terrorise them. Some women, having thrown their children first off the bridge on to the sharp cliff, jumped themselves to save their honor and dignity."
THE RESETTLEMENT
The end of the genocide came in 1923, with the event known in diplomatic language as 'The Exchange'. In the book 'Black Sea', author Neal Ascherson writes: "The Turkish guide-books on sale in Turkey today offer this account of the 1923 catastrophe: 'After the proclamation of the Republic (Turkish), the Greeks who lived in the region returned to their own country. Their own country? Returned? Pontians had lived in that area for over 3,000 years. The Pontian dialect was not understandable to 20th century Athenians."
REMEMBRANCE DAY
In remembrance, Pontians separate from the rest of Asia Minor because, unlike the others who were forced to leave the area in one hit, the Pontians grabbed their arms to fight the Turks. The torture lasted for several more years. May 19 was chosen as Remembrance Day because it is on that day in 1919 and during the 19th hour that Kemal stepped foot into Pontos at the port of Samsunda. The actions of the Turks have been widely condemned. Let us never forget the 353,000 people who lost their lives.
